Toccoa is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rich in Indian history, Toccoa got its name from the Cherokee's meaning "the beautiful."

The City of Toccoa was chartered in 1874. Its origins trace back to the establishment of a coaling station for the Atlanta to Charlotte Railroad in the post Civil War period. Prior to that, the village was known as "Dry Pond." A famous historical mansion, "Travelers Rest, " some six miles east of the community , was a widely-known accomodation on the "King's Highway" as far back as 1783. The community has a heritage of Indian lore since the Cherokees occupied the area. It has a rich history of guerilla war activities during the Revolutionary period, but little active Civil War History.

As a result of the railroad, industry came to Toccoa around the turn of the century. These included textiles and furniture. In the 1930's, major metal-working industries, as well as a major thread producer, came to Toccoa. Also, a casket factory was begun. In the post World War II era, additional metal-working, plastics, lacquers, and synthetic textiles have located here to further diversify the industrial base of the community.

Keeping pace with Toccoa's broadening industrial base has been the Central business District, which has completed an Urban Redevelopment Project that provides a pedestrian mall with free-standing concrete canopies encompassing two of the major blocks of downtown shopping. This has been hailed as the 'shopping center concept' by experts and as one of the most outstanding downtown achievements in the Southeast.

Traveler's Rest Historic Site was the plantation home of Devereaux Jarrett on the Tugaloo River. Jarrett purchased the site in 1833 and made it the center of his thriving plantation, but to accomodate the growing number of travelers to the area, he added on to the structure and opened it to the public as an inn.
