Established in 1923 as a high-quality machine company, Gundlach's founder, T.J. Gundlach, did work for grain mills, mines, and foundries. Later, he invented the world's first two-stage roll crusher, changing the industry forever. His patented two-stage design eliminated the need for additional investment in conveyors, chute work, and screens.

This two-stage design led to major advancements in crusher roll design. T.J. Also designed and patented the pocket tooth roll design which produced a lesser percentage of fines in the crushed product by 50% over any other crusher roll design in existence. Later, Gundlach improved on this concept with the introduction of the continuous-tooth roll design, which increased the tonnage life of the rolls from 3 to ten fold.

Today, Gundlach markets world-wide through licensees and representatives in Europe, India, People's Republic of China, South Africa, Taiwan R.O.C. , and South America.

In 1923, T. J. Gundlach opened his Belleville, Illinois, machine shop. He provided equipment maintenance to area mines, grain mills, foundries and factories. Following World War II while calling on Southern Illinois coal mines, T.J. Became aware of the problems of crushing coal down to usable sizes. It was a labor-intensive and complicated process involving several crushers, chutes, conveyors, screens and feeders. T.J. Saw a better way. T.J. Designed and engineered a single-stage, two-roll crusher that could break run-of-mine coal down to 19 mm pieces.
